Applicants must select their preferred hunt locations and seasons, indicating up to three choices in order of preference. The application process is structured around specific lottery periods, with each individual allowed to submit only one application per lottery, although group hunts are permitted under certain conditions. Important information required on the application includes the applicant's personal details, such as name, address, and social security number, as well as the signature certifying that all statements are truthful and that the applicant is not delinquent on child support orders. Common mistakes

  1. Failing to submit the application by the deadline. Each lottery has specific dates, and applications received after these dates will be entered into the next application period.

  2. Not selecting the correct hunt location choices. Applicants must list their preferred counties or Special Hunt Areas in the order of preference, as specified on the application.

  3. Providing inaccurate personal information. It is crucial to ensure that the Social Security Number, IDNR Customer Number, and other personal details are correct to avoid processing delays.

  4. Neglecting to sign the application. The applicant’s signature certifies the truth of the statements made and acknowledges that hunting privileges have not been suspended.

  5. Forgetting to include an unfilled voided check. This is required for payment processing if the applicant is successful in the lottery.

  6. Applying for a group hunt in Lottery 3. Group hunt applications are not accepted in this lottery, which can lead to disqualification.

Documents used along the form

The Illinois Turkey Permit Application form is essential for residents wishing to hunt wild turkey during the designated seasons. However, several other forms and documents may be needed to complete the application process. Below is a list of these documents, each serving a specific purpose in the application and hunting process.

  • Voided Check: Applicants must submit an unfilled voided check with their application. This check is not cashed at the time of application but serves as a method of payment if the applicant is awarded a permit.
  • Identification: A valid form of identification, such as a driver’s license or state ID, may be required to verify residency and age when applying for the permit.
  • Social Security Number: The application requires the applicant's Social Security Number to ensure proper identification and eligibility for the permit.
  • Customer ID Number: Each applicant must provide their IDNR Customer Number, which helps track applications and permits issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
  • Group Hunt Application (if applicable): For those applying as part of a group, a separate form may be needed to designate a group leader and list all group members.
  • Proof of Residency: Documents such as utility bills or lease agreements may be necessary to establish residency in Illinois, as only residents are eligible for the spring turkey permit.
  • Hunting License: A valid Illinois hunting license is often required to apply for the turkey permit. This ensures that all hunters are compliant with state hunting regulations.
  • Application Fee Payment: While a voided check is submitted, applicants should be prepared to pay the $19 application fee if they are successful in the lottery drawing.
  • Season and County Selection: Applicants must indicate their preferred hunting locations and seasons on the application, which is crucial for permit allocation.

Having these documents prepared and understanding their purpose can streamline the application process. Ensuring all necessary information is accurate and complete will enhance the chances of successfully obtaining a turkey hunting permit in Illinois.

Misconceptions

Misconceptions about the Illinois Turkey Permit Application can lead to confusion and frustration for applicants. Here are four common misunderstandings:

  • Only One Application is Allowed: Many believe they can submit only one application for the turkey permit. In reality, applicants can submit multiple applications depending on the lottery they are applying for. For instance, up to three applications are allowed for group hunts.
  • Late Applications Will Be Considered: Some applicants think that submitting their application after the deadline will still allow them to participate in the current lottery. However, applications received after the deadline will be entered into the next application period, not the current one.
  • Permits Can Be Transferred: There is a common belief that turkey permits can be transferred between individuals. This is incorrect. Permits are not transferable and are valid only for the individual who applied.
  • Payment is Required at Application: Many applicants assume they must pay the permit fee when submitting their application. In fact, applicants are only charged if they are successful in the lottery drawing. An unfilled voided check must be submitted, but no funds will be taken until a permit is issued.
